Mattress Protectors and Bed Pads

An older woman smooths a shiny gray fitted cover over a mattress, with folded quilted pads on a bench beside the bed.

A mattress protector and a bed pad often land in the same order, and they are different items. The protector is the piece that stays with the mattress. The bed pad is the layer you take off when it is wet, either to throw away or to wash.

The Amazon prices from when the article was written below are bed pads. Medline Ultrasorbs disposable underpads, 30 by 36 inches, 70 to a case, were $121.00. The description says the backsheet does not let liquid through and that the pad is meant to keep a mattress or another surface dry. That is still a disposable sheet you use up. A washable pad at 36 by 76 inches, with tuck-in sides, listed for king and California king beds, was $39.99. The listing says those tuck-ins let it stand in for a mattress protector. A PRIVA washable pad at 17 by 22 inches was $9.65, and the recorded note treats it as a small pad, not a full mattress cover.

Check the Amazon listing before buying; its price, count, and size may have changed since this article was written.

Those three prices cover two pad sizes and one counted case. $121.00 divided by 70 is about $1.73 a disposable sheet. The washable prices are for one pad each. Bed pads and mattress covers for nighttime leaks is the longer page on how the layers sit together. Incontinence products for seniors is the wider supply list, including what is worn as well as what goes on the bed.

The layer you take off when it is wet

A bed pad is the sheet you change. In the disposable case, that means the next sheet comes from the bag and the used one goes in the trash. The Medline title also says chucks and chux, premium ultra thick, and full body coverage. Those are title phrases. Amazon showed that recorded price of $121.00 when the article was written for Medline Ultrasorbs disposable underpads, 30 by 36 inches, 70 count.

Hands comparing a smooth sheet and a quilted pad

The PRIVA pad is washed, not tossed, and it covers a small area. Amazon showed that recorded price of $9.65 when the article was written for the PRIVA 17 by 22 inch washable pad. If the job is a full mattress, a 17 by 22 inch pad is the wrong cut, protector or not. The 30 by 36 inch disposable is a mid-size sheet sold by the case. Match the inches to the part of the bed you are covering, and write them on the reorder.

If a disposable underpad sits over a protector, reordering only the cheaper of the two lines can swap in a different object. A 70-count case and a single washable pad both mention the mattress, and they are still different buys. Keep the protector, if you use one, as its own line with its own size.

A listing that uses the words mattress protector

The 36 by 76 inch washable pad is the recorded product whose listing says it can stand in for a mattress protector. Tuck-in sides are part of that description, and the page names king and California king beds. Amazon showed that recorded price of $39.99 when the article was written for the 36 by 76 inch reusable bed pad with tuck-ins. If that is the item already on the bed, reordering it means the same inches and the same washable pad. It does not mean adding a second product with protector in the title unless you decided you want both.

A protector that stays on the mattress and a pad you change can still be bought together. The cart should show two lines when that is the plan: one for the cover that remains, one for the pad you lift off. The back of a disposable pad, plastic or cloth-like, is a further choice on the pad line only. Plastic-backed and cloth-backed underpads stays on that outer layer.

Chairs and sofas are outside this pair. Chair pads and furniture protectors is the furniture order. A bed pad’s inches, including 30 by 36 or 36 by 76, describe a bed, not a seat. Check the old email for protector, disposable underpad, or washable pad before you send the same link again.
